The Importance of Investing in Colombia

JAKARTA – Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) is fully committed to representing the interests of palm oil producing countries and strongly supports the welfare and well-being of the oil palm smallholders. In late February 2019, CPOPC facilitated “Seminar on Investment Opportunities in the Colombian Palm Oil Sector” in efforts to promote palm oil cultivation in Colombia aiming at providing viable livelihoods in regions particularly those most affected by armed conflict.

Palm oil sector is increasingly becoming a strategic economic contributor in Colombia generating 3.7 billion USD, and creating 161.000 direct and indirect jobs. This sector plays an important role in the consolidation and stabilization of the national territory, by making a positive impact in the communities and regions. ‘’In turn, it shall increasingly bring welfare to the rural areas to help the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals,’’ told Executive Director of CPOPC, Mr. Mahendra Siregar, during the opening speech.

The seminar presented Executive Director of ProColombia in South-East Asia, Mr. Diego Fernando Cifuentes Vargas; Ministy of Agriculture of Colombia, represented by Mr. Felipe Fonseca Fino, Director of the Rural Agrarian Planning Unit; Executive President of FEDEPALMA, Ms. Ximena Mahecha; and the Ambassador of Colombia to Indonesia, H.E. Juan Camilo Valencia; and attended by honorable guests, H.E. Ms Teresa Kok, Minister of Primary Industries of Malaysia and Ms. Musdhalifah Machmud, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture of the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs of Indonesia; business representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Colombia.

The seminar allowed business sector to have round table meetings and sharing their perspectives on establishing short and medium-term partnership, that will grant the possibility of boosting the Colombian palm oil sector through an investment opportunities worth USD 2 billion.

The Ministers responsible for the palm oil industry from Malaysia, Her Excellency Mdm. Teresa Kok, Minister of Primary Industries of Malaysia, and His Excellency Mr. Darmin Nasution, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia co-chaired the 6th Ministerial Meeting of Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 28 February 2019. The Ministry of Agriculture of Colombia was represented by Mr Felipe Fonseca Fino, Director of Agricultural Rural Planning Unit.

To Chart Out a Direction for Biofuel Development: CPOPC Business Forum

PUTRAJAYA – To boost domestic demand and push forward the palm oil industry, Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) organized Business Forum on 12 February 2019 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Over a hundred palm oil stakeholders from five countries attended the event that aims to promote higher biodiesel blends in Malaysia and wider use of hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO), the next generation of biodiesel.
