The 17 Sustainable Development Goals set in the UN Agenda 2030 provide a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for the people around the world. In those countries where they are produced, vegetable oils and their value chains play a crucial role in achieving the SDGs. Palm oil, as the most commonly used vegetable oil worldwide and with the best yields by far, is a prime example – even acknowledged by the EU, which established a joint working group with the ASEAN on SDGs in the vegetable oils sector following the EU-ASEAN Summit of 1st December 2020.
The well-documented shift of the palm oil industry towards sustanibility and its role in achieving the SDGs has been recognized by several stakeholders as well as by the academia in multiply studies worldwide. Notably, the one conducted by the University of Jambi, IPB University and the The University of Göttingen on the “Impact of Vegetable Oils on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, providing science-based evidence that palm oil industry directly contributes to the achievement of 8 out of the 17 SDGs, in particular “No poverty”, “Zero hunger” and “Quality education”. In fact, millions of small-scale farmers make a living from palm oil in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Stressing on the awareness of the palm oil’s sector importance for millions of smallholders in the producing countries and building on undenaiable academical findings, this webinar will be an excellent occasion to discuss, in front of an international audience, the main issues around palm oil’s role in the attainment of the UN SDGs, in the following outline:
