The Council’s New Executive Director

JAKARTA – Former CEO of Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), who was also an Advisor to the Minister of Plantation Industries of Malaysia, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yusof Basiron, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), effective 1 June 2019. Dr Yusof succeeds Mr Mahendra Siregar, former Executive Director, who is now the Indonesian Ambassador to the USA in Washington.

Dr Yusof Basiron shall lead the CPOPC Secretariat until 2022

Dr Yusof is an influential public figure in Malaysian palm oil industry. He has been the CEO of the MPOC since 2007 and was the director-general of the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (which later became the Malaysian Palm Oil Board) for 14 years, from 1992 to 2006. He is also an Independent Non-Executive Director of Sime Darby.

Mr Yusof joins CPOPC at a time when this inter-governmental organization is positioned to further promote, develop and strengthen cooperation among oil palm cultivating countries to ensure long-term benefits of palm oil to the economic development of the people in member countries. For 2019 onwards, Mr Yusof will lead CPOPC to undertake strategic directions, for the improvement of palm oil sector.

“Main priorities will include balancing palm oil supply and demand, in order to maintain price stability through the remunerative pricing and promoting biodiesel mandates to create new demands,” said Mr Yusof in Jakarta. “Simultaneously, CPOPC will continue to facilitate Indonesia and Malaysia to recreate the green image of the palm oil industry,” Mr Yusof concluded.

While committed to empower smallholders and ensuring environmental sustainability, CPOPC also promotes strategic cooperation among palm oil cultivating countries and encourages their participation as CPOPC members to better address international trade barriers.

7th Ministerial Meeting Statement

KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministers responsible for the palm oil industry from Malaysia, Her Excellency Mdm. Teresa Kok, Minister of Primary Industries of Malaysia, and His Excellency Mr. Darmin Nasution, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia co-chaired the 7th Ministerial Meeting of Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 16 July 2019. The Meeting was also attended by Colombia, represented by His Excellency Mr. Mauricio Gonzalez Lopez, Ambassador of Colombia to Malaysia, in its capacity as an observer state.

To Tie in with Thailand

BANGKOK – The newly appointed Executive Director of Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yusof Basiron, conducted a two-day visit to Bangkok, Thailand, in early July 2019. The essence of the visit was to introduce CPOPC’s new board of directors, as the organization seeks to open channels for the government of Thailand to join CPOPC.
